Mold Design
The Catch 5 Football product is a custom foam toy used to play the game ‘Jackpot’. The client needed us to create a proof of concept design that allowed them to pitch the idea and gain funding for manufacturing.
In order for the game to be played, each player requires a designated number of slots to insert coins into before each turn before they throw the ball. Our design was based on the size parameters of a youth football.
Engineering the Tools
Since so many slots were required to play Jackpot, the two part mold became more challenging. A series of keys were designed to function as inserts while expanding foam cured within the mold.
Each of the slots contained small circular relief cuts to accommodate the insertion and removal of coins. The mold cavities also contained branding features to emboss a custom logo into the football.

The Catch 5 Football Mold
The molds were made of 3D printed nylon for a reduction in mold cost, an increased surface quality, as well as higher accuracy within the part fit.
The De-Molded Football
Once the Catch 5 Football was demolded, it was cleaned & tested with the custom coins provided.
